Amish Quilts

winner-chosen

Most of us would agree that Amish quilts are something of a cultural icon. They’re beautiful as well as functional and serve as a form of entertainment and togetherness for the Amish women who make them.

quilt-pattern
Quilt block from a quilt my Amish friend made for one of her daughters.

We have heard of or seen pictures of Amish women gathered around a large quilt frame, stitching and talking. Family members get together to make a quilt for a daughter who’s getting married. Friends and fellow church members may gather to make a quilt to send to a country in need, like Haiti. Or members of a district may work together to make a quilt to donate to an auction to help a community member facing hard times.

More Than a Marriage, the last novella in my Amish Quilting Circle Series releases at the end of February and features a group of Wells Landing Amish women who get together once a week to sew quilts for the Clarita School Auction. Most of you know that Wells Landing is inspired by the Amish settlement in Chouteau, Oklahoma. But the Clarita School Auction is one hundred percent factual and takes place every September. Click HERE for more info about the Clarita School Auction.

As much as we love Amish quilts, my Amish friend in Lancaster recently told me that the Amish girls of today are shying away from quilts and leaning more toward modern English comforter sets. This type of mindset could eventually lead to the discontinuation of the traditions surrounding these beautiful works of art. I don’t know about you, but just the thought makes me want to cry.

I love quilts and can’t imagine anyone picking a comforter over a hand sewn (or even machine sewn) work of love.

My friend has a quilt shop at her home. (Esh’s Quilts). Her sister made a quilted table runner for me. I love it!
My sister just bought a quilt last September. It is beautiful.
Quilts and quilted things are a tradition in Amish Country. I would hate to see this tradition end.

  3. That would be such a loss to stop the quilt making for the wedding. What a honor be to own one. Maybe someday I will. Really be sad if they quit the tradition.

  7. I have a quilt and 3 dolls. I can’t imagine why the girls would want a store bought comforter sure they have pretty ones, but nothing like a homemade quilt, I have some quilts my mom made I wouldn’t trade for anything. Enjoyed your blog.

  20. I would think if they did not continue to make quilts that it would hurt their entire communities financially, such a loss if they left their heritage that way.
I have an Amish potholder I won from Wanda Brunstetter and also a book of hers.

    1. I’m sure some communities would be affected more than others. Hopefully that revenue alone will keep the tradition alive for a little longer. But it seems that making a wedding quilt for the daughters is becoming a lost art.

  22. Half the things in my house I bought from amish craft shops! One thing that I do treasure is fabric placemats that I had my amish friend make for me. We went to the fabric store and I picked out a fall motif and as we were looking for something to go on the back I saw some christmas fabric in fat quarters. So one side is fall placemats, then early December I turn then over for christmas. Sweet memory as I think of her hurridly making them for me all while making homemade grape juice because I was leaving in just a few days.
